Hey Keith. Isn't that an amazing video? And all this time I thought you wrote Amazing Grace, and Acappella and all those songs. (Smile.)
And to answer your question, I am posting a study on Ezekiel on my blog at www.latayne.com -- Latayne Scott Re: Re: Amazing Grace - Wintley Phipps Video

The Reunion wasn't the same without you guys here. I guess you can make only so many "Tennessee trips" in one year? We appreciate you being at Allen & Kim's wedding reception! One day, we'll take a goldwing trip to Albuquerque.

WOW! Thanks so much for posting that video. I could listen to that man talk and sing the rest of my life.
Re: Amazing Grace - Wintley Phipps Video
From my research, it is a myth that Newton heard the tune we know as "Amazing Grace" and used it for his poem. It makes a good story but isn't true.
John Newton was born in 1725 and died in 1807 - in England. The poem from which "Amazing Grace" came was named "Faith's Review and Expectation" and appeared in the Olney Hymns in 1779. [Hymns Of Our Faith by Broadman Press, 1964, page 15.] & [Hymns And History by ACU Press, 1997, page 50.] The "Amazing Grace" tune first showed up in the Virginia Harmony book in 1831 - in America. [Hymns Of Our Faith by Broadman Press, 1964, page 16.] & [Hymns And History by ACU Press, 1997, page 50.] I have several songbooks in my library that date in the late 1800's that have different tunes for Newton's lyrics. Some use the tune "Arlington", which we remember as "Again the Lord of Light and Life" by Arne. It is true that the "Amazing Grace" tune might have come from Africa and many tribes did use the pentatonic scale, but the evidence seems to show the tune being more recent and an ocean away. The fact is, Newton didn't put the two together. That was done here in the US some 24 years after Newton's death. I have told the story myself for the truth and I beg the forgiveness of those whom I may have misled. |
